Jubilee 150 years since the establishment of the Cetinje Reading Room was marked last night at the National Library “Đurđe Crnojević” in Cetinje
The Public Library and Reading Room “Njegoš”, former “Reading Room Cetinje”, as the director of this institution Vesna Lagator-Pijevac pointed out, is not only a room for storing books, but also a place for performing educational work and a space intended for cultural activities.
“Today, this institution is a modern library that collects, arranges, preserves and provides library materials and information to all interested users, respecting the principles of democracy and the freedom of access to its materials and holdings”, Lagator-Pijevac said.
Within this ceremony, Radovan Radonjić, PhD, opened the exhibition of books prepared by Milenija Vračar, a library consultant of the National Library, which, among other things, contains a selection of literature on the “Reading Room Cetinje” since its founding until now, the editions of “Reading Room Cetinje” and the selection from the funds of the National Library and Reading Room “Njegoš”.
“At the time of its foundation “Reading Room Cetinje” had only 68 titles of domestic and foreign publications, while nowadays the holdingsof its successor, the National Library of Montenegro, have more than two million library units”, said Radonjic, adding that this impressive fact does not release us of the obligation to achieve the same or approximate level, relating both to the quantity and the quality of the factual effect of a good book on the development of our view of the world and life.
Radonjić is convinced that we have the strength to regain spiritual code and ethical order, which, in his opinion, were and remained pledge of the millennium duration of freedom in Montenegro.
“During every sequence of this road, this institution, despite all the problems it encountered, was reliable moderator of our finest human and intellectual upgrade. We would like to remain that”, concluded Radonjić.
An art program was also held within this event, during which performed a flutist Žana Lekić, professor of the Music Academy.
The Public Library and Reading Room “Njegoš” is one of the oldest cultural institutions in Montenegro. It was founded on February 4, 1868, and its founders were Montenegrin sovereign Nikola I Petrović-Njegoš, Metropolitan Ilarion Roganović and 19 most distinguished figures in Montenegro then.
Celebration of marking 150th anniversary of the “Reading Room Cetinje” was organized by the National Library of Montenegro “Đurđe Crnojević” in cooperation with the Public Library and Reading Room “Njegoš”.
