Senior librarian of the National Library of Serbia Beba Stanković held a lecture on “Cultural Diplomacy and Librarianship” at the National Library of Montenegro “Đurđe Crnojević” in Cetinje on Friday, March 16.
According to Stanković, cultural institutions, festivals and cultural activities are an important factor in international cooperation. However, in the field of culture, much can be achieved in the local environments in which we live and work.
“Cultural diplomacy is not exclusively international activity – we deal with it in our environment, our city and later we turn to the state and the region. What cultural activities, festivals and institutions can achieve as factors of international cooperation even very skilled politicians are not able to do. So attention should be paid especially to this field of action, in which libraries, besides all cultural institutions, are unavoidable.” – Stanković said.
In a lecture, attended by librarians from several Montenegrin cities, she explained that cultural diplomacy in library activity has developed over the last two to three decades. Thanks to IT technologies and modern ways of communication, libraries have the opportunity to develop the role of leading information institutions through the field of cultural diplomacy.
