Reading Rooms and Membership

Library Materials of the National Library of Montenegro are primarily used in the reading rooms of the NLM “Đurđe Crnojević”.

Contemporary equipped reading rooms for the use of library materials of the Basic Fund and Special Collections are located in the former Italian Embassy building. Those are the Science Reading Room, e-Reading Room (for the use of electronic publications, the Internet, COBISS system), Music Reading Room (for the use of all types of music materials: music manuscripts, scores, audio-video records and documents), and Cartography Reading Room.

Users of Museum fund, Old and Rare Books collection and legacies can use library materials in the reading room in the former French Embassy building.

Each member of the National Library can use all the funds of the library, but also the electronic library catalogue and shared electronic catalog, which are available 24 hours for search via internet:

For publications published before 1991, there is a card catalogue, created in 1949. It includes special card catalogues: alphabetical catalogue of books, alphabetical catalogue of serials, card catalogues of special collections, card subject catalogue and card professional catalogue.

In the NLM reading rooms borrowed library materials can be photographed, copied and scanned in accordance with the Copyright Law and the NLM Rulebook on the Use of Library Materials.

Membership can be obtained for a year (from the date of registration), monthly or for a period of three days.
Library materials are available on equal terms to all citizens of Montenegro and foreign persons over 18 years of age. When they register, the future users are required to provide accurate personal information and identity cards or other identification documents. Notwithstanding, the persons under 18 years of age (secondary school last grade pupils) can be registered after approval. Foreign nationals residing in Montenegro can use the library materials with a valid passport.

Working hours of the reading rooms are from 7am to 7pm on weekdays, and from 7am to 2pm on Saturdays.

Interlibrary Loan

The National Library practices interlibrary loan of publications with libraries from Montenegro and from abroad through international loans. Borrowed publications can be used for no more than 30 days and only in the premises of the library at which they have been requested. Exclusively books and copies of articles from serials are given on loan.
Publications issued before 1950 may not be given on loan.
